Full-body veterinary disposable coveralls are used when floor-level or wide-area exposure is highly likely. According to the AAHA, that includes:
- Large-Animal/Livestock Care: When walking into active barn environments, pastures, or poultry operations to manage disease outbreaks. Jumpsuits protect the worker from herd-wide pathogens like leptospirosis.
- Floor-Level Small-Animal Care: When treating large or uncooperative dogs and other animals with highly contagious, fluid-shedding illnesses (like severe hemorrhagic gastroenteritis) that require the veterinarian or veterinary technician to sit on the floor and physically restrain the animal.

What are the OSHA guidelines for veterinary PPE?
OSHA’s Personal Protective Equipment Standard (29 CFR 1910 Subpart I) requires veterinary employers, including colleges and schools, to perform a written Job Hazard Assessment. Wherever a physical, biological, or chemical hazard is identified, the clinic is legally mandated to provide the appropriate PPE to employees.
While OSHA’s Bloodborne Pathogens Standard primarily targets human-to-human disease transmission (e.g., handling human blood after a staff injury), veterinary clinics must maintain an Exposure Control Plan for pathogens. When handling infectious animals or body fluids, OSHA requires fluid-impervious barrier PPE (such as gloves, aprons, jumpsuits, etc.)
